A raised eyebrow or the question… “Can you spell that?” are the responses residents of this town usually receive when they tell people where they live. But living in Kill Devil Hills is worth those responses when you realize all the town has to offer. From the beautiful sunsets over Kitty Hawk Bay to the Beacon atop the Wright Memorial to the sun rising over the Atlantic, Kill Devil Hills is truly a special place.
Like most areas of the beach there is a large sand dune that runs down the spine of much of this town. Houses located on the sound side of the dune overlooking Kitty Hawk Bay have a tremendous view of the sunsets especially when the winds are calm and the sky reflects off the water. Much of Kill Devil Hills is protected from development. The two largest tracts are either national park or conservation land. The Wright Brothers National Park consists of over 350 acres of prime beach real estate and the Nags Head Woods Preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy is well over 160 acres.
According to the 2000 USA Census, Kill Devil Hills has more permanent residents than any other Outer Banks beach town. It is also a center for many beach recreational activities. The town hosts a few large county recreational facilities and schools. Visit Rec Park any Saturday during the school year and see hundreds of local kids playing organized sports. In the summer, you can see future Major League Baseball players playing for the Dare Devils in the summer Coastal Plain League at First Flight High School.
Kill Devil Hills is likely to have the most affordable prices in all of the Outer Banks. Being one of the first areas to develop, lot sizes here are generally smaller than other places. This has helped prices stay lower because larger houses do not fit on these smaller lots.
Over the years this town has welcomed business and development with open arms. One of the Outer Banks first large developments was started in Kill Devil Hills. Avalon Beach was developed in the 50’s and many of the concrete block, flat top homes still exist there today. Kill Devil Hills has also has had much of the latest development occur. Right now there are a few new ocean front condominium projects being developed. Both First Flight Retreat and the Croatan Surf Club are upscale properties with some units still available. There are still a few large tracts of land left that will have new projects on them in coming years.
Many retail stores and restaurants call Kill Devil Hills home. The choices here range from fast food at one of the many national chains to local gourmet restaurants with excellent wine lists. The vacationer season here starts at the end of May and is strong until the first part of September. The weekends in the spring and the fall are big for Kill Devil Hills as well.
Kill Devil Hills has a bright future ahead as redevelopment occurs in many of the town’s older subdivisions and the last of the large tracts of land are improved.
