The weather on the Outer Banks this time of year can be hit or miss. Usually early in the month, it will be cold and rainy. Chances of having nice weather days gets better towards the end of the month. Here are a few fun things to do here that you may want to put on your Outer Banks bucketlist for March.
Attend the St Patrick’s Day Parade
Nags Head hosts the largest St Patrick’s Day parade in North Carolina each year. This parade has been running since 1990 on or around St Patrick’s Day. For many folks this weekend event kicks off the spring tourist season. This is a great way to get your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations started!
Visit a Sound Side Access
The prevailing winds this time of year are from the northeast and the ocean temperature is likely to be less than forty degrees. That means that spending time on the beach can be chilly! A sound beach is a good place to be this month and most of the spring. The warmest places on the sound will be where the island is the widest. Those cold ocean breezes will have less impact there. A great place to enjoy the sound is one of the sound accesses in Nags Head Woods. The sound access trail behind the YMCA in Nags Head is over a mile from the beach! Sunny days in March are usually a good time to check out a sound access.
Go Golfing
The Outer Banks has quite a few golf courses. After being inside most of the last two months, you’ll want to take advantage of a sunny and less windy day on the links. Even on sunny days, the four courses located on the island won’t be busy this time of year. There are a variety of courses here. All are fairly challenging and worth playing. All these courses are privately owned, and some are part of a country club. Policies to play the country club courses change over the years but it’s highly likely you can get a round in this time of year. The four courses on the island are the Seascape Golf Course, Nags Head Links, The Currituck Club and Duck Woods Country Club.
If you are not a big fan of golf, then you might want to also consider disc golfing. There’s a disc golf course in Kill Devil Hills behind the high school. This course was developed by the town of Kill Devil Hills and is free.
Most activities on the Outer Banks this month are weather dependent. Seventy-five-to-eighty-degree days are do occur. However, most days this month will be in the fifties or low sixties since we are surrounded by cold water. We hope you get a chance to check off your own Outer Banks bucketlist for March this year!
