Bodie Island Lighthouse was first built in the mid 1840’s. The first lighthouse was not built on a solid foundation. When it started to lean it was destroyed. The second lighthouse was destryoyed by a retreating Confederate Army during the war between the states. The lighthouse seen in this picture is the third Bodie Island Lighthouse that was built in 1872.
Tours of the lighthouse are scheduled daily and groups climb the lighthouse with a National Park Service guide almost hourly. Viewing the lighthouse with this guide provides you with the history of the lighthouse and other interesting lighthouse facts.
