Chicahauk is a subdivision within the town of Southern Shores. It’s one of the favorites of Scott Team Realty agents and locals. This article will share some of the history of the subdivision and reasons why it is a favorite.
History
The property currently known as the town of Southern Shores was acquired by the Stick family to develop into a beach community. Close to four miles of land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Currituck Sound was developed by the Sticks over about a fifty-year period starting shortly after World War II.
Before the Stick’s purchased the property some of Chicahauk was used as a bombing range during World War II. In fact, Hal Denny, a former Southern Shores Mayor used to tell stories of shooting targets in Chicahauk from his fighter airplane during the war.
Chicahauk is one of the later sections of Southern Shores to be developed. This property was first subdivided in the 1970’s. Unlike many other subdivisions in Dare County, a careful subdivision based on the topography of the land was created. This thoughtful way to develop allows for meandering roads and many large homesites. Over 100 acres of common area and nature trails connect interior lots to the beach. Covenants and Restrictions also for this subdivision to insure that homes built here would provide a specific beachy feel.
Topography
The topography in this subdivision has ecosystems that are just about as diverse as the Outer Banks. Live oak groves influenced by the salt mist are common to the ocean side of the dune that runs north to south through Chicahauk. On the sound side of that vegetated dune, you’ll find hickory and other hard wood tress as well as large pine trees along the canals. There are also some marshy areas of this subdivision in some of the common areas.
Water front property is also common in Chicahauk. From the may private lots and the community park on Trinitie Trail there is access to the canals leading to Ginguite Creek and the Currituck Sound. It’s possible to get to both the Atlantic Ocean and Virginia from the Currituck Sound. The sound is a perfect place to watch the sunset, among other places on the OBX.
