This video was taken in June of 2013. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site tells the story of the first European colony in the New World. In 1587 ships from England arrived with its passengers ready to settle in the New World. They built the first settlement and fort on Roanoke Island. Unfortunately the settlement was unsuccessful. When the English returned three years later they found none of the orginal settlers. What happened to those original settlers? It is still a mystery where they went and what happened to them. Besides this tragic story, this museum also holds some artifacts that have been found on a few of the archialogical digs in and around Roanoke Island. Spending a few hours touring this site and learning more about this “Lost Colony” is certainly worth the time.
Besides the artifact displays, you can also get a feel for what living on Roanoke Island must have been like over 350 years ago. You can walk through the live oak groves, see the earth works and enjoy reading the historical markers.
