The difference in the Outer Banks weather from the beginning of April and the end of April is often dramatic. After the cold, rainy and windy month of March, it’s a great month to get outside and explore parts of the Outer Banks not visited before. Here are two things you may want to put on your Outer Banks bucketlist for April.
Outer Banks History
April is a good month to focus on Outer Banks history. From The Lost Colony, to the Wright Brother’s Memorial to the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum, there are many fun things to choose from. Baseline markers are a little-known piece of Outer Banks history.
Knowing who owns the property has been important for man as long as there’s been history. A starting point is needed when finding boundaries. An immovable object is the best type of starting point. That’s hard to find on the Outer Banks with the shifting sands and no rocks. Over 100 years ago, baseline markers were put in place. Most have been lost but there are still a few here that are accessible. There’s a baseline marker near the visitor’s center at Whalebone Junction and another baseline marker on the North Carolina/Virginia state line north of Corolla. Cape Point Fishing
Scoured and molded by both the Gulf Stream and the Labrador current, the Outer Banks coastline moves as these currents push sand. Where these two currents meet is Cape Point. This constantly changing sandy point is a fish magnet. Cape Point is known among surf fishermen as one of the best places to surf fish in the entire world. April usually brings the big red drum and cobia as they migrate north. It’s not unusual for these fish to weigh over 50 pounds! Even if you don’t like to fish, it’s quite a spectacle to see dozens and dozens of fishermen standing shoulder to shoulder with hopes of catching one of these big fish. You’ll either need a robust 4WD vehicle or plan on hiking a mile or two along the beach to get to the point.
With the weather warming up, there are many other great activities to enjoy here. We hope to see you on the Outer Banks soon and that you add these two activities to your Outer Banks bucketlist for April!
