It’s amazing today what you can find on the Internet. Dare County Government is a very good source of Outer Banks property information. The Dare County GIS (Geographical Information System) department has all kinds of good information that both visitors and locals will need at some point. So what is GIS? A large part of GIS is aerial photographs that you can manipulate on-line to see different types of information. Layers of information are placed on top of the aerial photographs of the … Continue reading...

Oriental Shipwreck Pea Island
The Oriental Shipwreck is probably the most visible shipwreck along the Outer Banks. You can see it at the beach across from the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center. Perhaps 150 yards offshore, is a smokestack and a round metal structure attached to it. That is the visible remains of the USS Oriental, a Union Army supply ship. The rest of the ship lies, perhaps 20’ or 25’ beneath the surface. What Happened It’s unclear why the ship ran aground that night. The … Continue reading...

The Outer Banks prides itself on being a family oriented place to live, work and visit. There’s a lot that goes into that. For families living here, Dare County schools rate very well among the state’s systems. There’s also the beach. It’s the reason people have been visiting this sandbar by the sea for almost 200 years. Outer Banks Thanksgiving 2022
There’s a lot happening on the Outer Banks this Thanksgiving. Outer Banks visitors tend to think of the summer as the time of year when everything is happening on the Outer Banks. Outer Banks Co-Ownership Property
Co-ownership homes on the Outer Banks became popular in the 1980’s. A co-ownership home is not a time-share property. Most Outer Banks co-ownership properties (sometimes called fractional ownership), give a buyer one tenth possession of the home. It's possible to purchase more than one tenth and some owners do. The other owners could be your friends and relatives. But in most cases, it is other folks who love the Outer Banks as much as you. Each year you'll have five weeks to use the property … Continue reading...
Buying Coastal OBX Property
Days like today remind me that buying a home on the beach is different than buying inland. Hurricane Nicole is off the coast of Florida. When you have that low pressure to the south and the high pressure to our north, the winds along the Outer Banks get extremely gusty. Our marine forecast within 20 miles of the beach is calling for eight to ten foot seas. We might also have gale force north east winds. Buying coastal OBX property is unique for many reasons. This post identifies some of those … Continue reading...
